Resignation of Zaka Ashraf: PCB Management Committee Chairman steps down

Zaka Ashraf, the Chairman of the PCB Management Committee, has resigned from his position, surprising the Pakistan cricket community. This unexpected decision comes after the recent postponement of the PCB Management Committee meeting in Karachi by the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination.

Multiple Pakistani media outlets have reported that the 72-year-old Ashraf has also stepped down from his responsibilities in forming the Board of Governors (BoGs). This follows his tenure extension to three months by the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination in November 2023, with the main responsibility of finalizing the Board of Governors and overseeing the elections for the Chairman position after the ICC World Cup 2023 in India.

At the fourth management committee meeting at PCB’s National Cricket Academy in Lahore, Ashraf expressed his gratitude to PCB members and Patron Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kaka for their support during his tenure. He announced his resignation at the end of the meeting, stating, “I was working for the betterment of cricket but it is not possible for us to work in this way. Now it is up to Prime Minister [Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar], whomever he nominates [will take my place],” as quoted by Geo News.

It’s worth noting that Pakistan’s men’s cricket team has not achieved significant milestones since Ashraf’s appointment last year, with disappointing performances in the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup in India. The team also suffered losses in Test and ongoing series against Australia and New Zealand respectively. Their last international victory occurred 76 days ago.
