Delhi Capitals are in advanced discussions to purchase stakes in English county team Hampshire, according to reports. The GMR Group, co-owners of the IPL franchise, is reportedly close to finalizing a deal to acquire the majority share of the club from former Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove. If the agreement goes through, Hampshire would become the first county side owned by an overseas franchise. The acquisition could benefit GMR by allowing them to establish a presence in English cricket and potentially gain a first-mover advantage in The Hundred franchise tournament. Reports also suggest that the ECB is exploring the possibility of opening up 50 percent stakes in a few Hundred teams and allowing host counties the option to sell their shares. Bransgrove, who served as Hampshire’s chairman for nearly 23 years, still holds a majority share of over 60 percent and has the flexibility to sell his stakes without fan input. GMR currently holds a 50 percent stake in the Delhi Capitals and also has interests in other cricket franchises around the world.
