The star all-rounder claimed a resounding win in the Bangladesh elections on Sunday. Shakib secured 185,388 votes, beating his rival by over 150,000 votes. The voting for the 12th national polls took place at 261,912 polling booths in 42,024 voting centers, with 299 parliamentary seats up for election.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also secured a landslide victory, winning the Gopalganj-3 constituency with 249,962 votes.
Prior to the elections, Hasina had encouraged Shakib to “hit a six” in the national election, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.
Shakib’s victory comes after a video of him slapping a fan went viral on social media. The incident is said to have occurred when Shakib went to one of the polling stations to cast his vote and was surrounded by fans. In the video, it showed a fan grabbing him from behind, and in response, Shakib slapped the fan.
It’s been over 17 years since Shakib played his first international match for Bangladesh and he has been a star performer for the team. As of now, he is ranked as the number one all-rounder in one-day internationals (ODIs) and T20I formats.
